Falling Action
Soon after, Alphonse dies of grief. Since every single person who he cares about has now died because of the monster, Victor becomes determined to exact revenge on his own creation in order to prevent himself from falling into complete despair. After a long search filled with hatred and determination, he eventually tracks down the monster and comes very close to capturing him in the Arctic. However, at the last moment, the ice collapses around them and the monster escapes again. Victor is left close to death until Walton and the rest of the ship's crew save him.
Victor's retelling of his story ends here, but Walton continues to write to Margaret about him. Victor's health continuously deteriorates until he is certain that he will die. Just before his time is up, in a meager attempt to deny that all of his efforts were for naught, he requests that Walton help him search for the monster and fulfill his revenge since he can no longer do so himself.

Now that Victor no longer has anyone
dear to him, he can finally understand
my feelings.
...Wow, I guess he feels really miserable
now, huh? Serves him right.
