Rising Action
Unfortunately, Victor's happy life does not last very long. His mother, Caroline, dies of scarlet fever just before Victor leaves to study at the University of Ingolstadt. He becomes fixated on the idea of bringing the dead back to life, and begins studying alchemy by himself in conjunction with his studies at the university. After a lot of research and hard work, he is thrilled as he successfully creates the monster, who is made up of the dead body parts of various people. However, he soon realizes that he has created a hideous monster and runs out of his apartment upon beholding his creation. While he reunited with his friend Henry Clerval, the monster disappears. Victor is nursed back to health by Henry.
Victor receives a letter from his father, Alphonse, stating that William was murdered. Justine is accused of committing the crime because she had in her possession a photo that William was supposedly carrying with him right before his death. Even though she is not guilty, she chooses to "confess", leading to her execution. While Victor is confident that the monster was responsible for strangling William to death, he does not tell anyone because he feels that his story would not be taken seriously and that he would only make a fool of himself.
William travels to Geneva to recover from the emotional burden of William and Justine's deaths, but instead of getting the relief he wanted, he encounters the monster near a glacier. The monster has learned to talk, and he tells of how he spent his time after he was abandoned by Victor. He had sought the company of others many times, including from a blind man named De Lacey, but failed because everyone cowered in fear at his grotesque appearance -- even the blind man's family. He admits that he had killed William and was indirectly responsible for Justine's death as well.

I can't believe he just ran away from me,
after he went through all that effort to
make me. We could have become good
friends... Instead, I had to fend for myself
and face rejection from everyone despite
my best efforts at being nice. :(
