Exposition
The story begins with a series of letters that Robert Walton writes to his sister Margaret Saville. He is the captain of a ship that is heading on an expedition to the North Pole. Although Walton eagerly awaits their arrival at their destination, he feels somewhat bored and lonely during the voyage, as the other people on the ship are not interested in having intellectual discussions with him related to his interests science and knowledge. When the ship stops briefly after encountering some sheets of ice, the crew spots a man and his dogsled stranded on the ice nearby. They rescue the man and nurse him back to health. When he has recovered enough, he introduces himself as Victor Frankenstein and acquaints himself with Walton.
Victor agrees to tell his story to Walton, who is very curious. He reveals that he is a member of the Frankenstein family, who were at first a very happy family. He had a good relationship with his parents, Alphonse and Caroline, and his younger sister, Elizabeth. Elizabeth is not biologically related to Victor's family, but was adopted after his family discovered her in a poor Italian cottage. Also in his household are William and Justine.

I really wonder how Victor could
have grown up to be so mean. He
had such a nice childhood, after
all. I'm actually kind of jealous.
